Happy Friday: How It All Began

Posted on by Patricia Leever

Happy Friday my fantabulous little love monkeys! Did you round-up this week and hog tie it like you were a rodeo star? Dang right you did!

Well, it has been a wicked crazy week here in my little corner of the world. The school year is wrapping up and I swear, the fourth grade is trying to cram as many projects into this last few weeks as it possibly can and having not one but TWO fourth graders. Needless to say, I’m busier than a cat trying to cover a turd on a marble floor. Whew. At least the oldest two, the boy spawns, had their last day of school yesterday. Two down, two to go!

Yes, it’s Friday and I thought for today, I’d tell you all how I got into the genre of historical romance. So grab your milk and cookies, come and sit with me in the big comfy chair and let me tell you a little story…

Believe it or not, I’m quite the late bloomer when it comes to being a fan of the genre. My love for historical romance started in January 2007. I had just had surgery and had heard about a book on a message board I frequented at the time, Lord of Seduction by Paula Quinn.

Reluctant Bride
By the king’s order, Lady Tanon Risande is to be wed to a fierce Welsh prince. Headstrong Tanon has other ideas, and none of them involve submitting to Prince Gareth ap Owain. Yet she can’t help but notice how the ladies of the court sigh at his mere glance. And when this rough warrior sets his penetrating gaze on her, Tanon, too, wonders what it would be like to bed a barbarian.

Lady Of Desire
Gareth is determined to prove to his delectable new wife that he saves his savagery for the battlefield, not the bedchamber. He will use far more persuasive methods to lure this lady willingly into his arms-and he looks forward to trying them all. But though Gareth is a prince, he cannot offer Tanon the finery she is used to, nor can he make sure she stays safe in his untamed land. What he can guarantee her is a love unlike any she has ever known.

Well, knowing that I was going to be laid up I decided to give it a shot and I was hooked like a big ol’ fish! Then I find out that this was the third book in the Risande Series. Of course, being stuck in bed I couldn’t just run on down to the local bookstore and grab them up, so I ordered them and then proceeded to stalk my mailman via my sickbed. I damn near pulled a stitch when the package containing Lord of Desire and Lord of Temptation came. I gobbled up those books like it was the last meal they were going to disappear if I didn’t consume them fast enough! Then I find out that she was starting to write the MacGregor Series about Highlanders. HIGHLANDERS!! GAH! Men in kilts? Um, yes please!

Now, I had always written, in one form or another but never anything serious. I’d dabbled in contemporary romance, but I’d only shared it with my closest friends. But I enjoyed reading Lord of Seduction so much that I thought I’d try my hand at the historical romance genre.

Long story short (too late, I know) I had written a good two-thirds of the story and then stalled. And stalled. And then I stalled some more. In fact, I sat stalled for three years! Luckily, I’d found a new love for romance writing and after dusting off my old writing chops I thought I’d give this little story of mine another go.

Boy am I glad that I did!

In closing I’d like to say a big, huge THANK YOU to Paula Quinn for her inspiration, because if I never would have picked up that first book, I may not have ever written a historical romance of my own.

Thank you Paula!

Did you like that little tale, my dreamy little love monkeys? Happy Friday: The Mystery Man Found?

Posted on by Patricia Leever

Happy Friday my googly little love monkeys! Did you whip this week into shape? Yeah ya did!

So, as you might have noticed from my little picture over there on the right, I got some new photos taken for the book cover. I’m not gonna lie, I felt like a HUGE cheese ball the entire shoot and the photo that you see was caught when I was goofing off and just being me. I know, I know, this is shocking new to all of you that I am a big ol’ gooftastic nerdling. Heck, even when they asked me to make a serious face, I couldn’t even do it. But, I’m happy with what I came home with and that is all what is important right?

Okay, on with why you’re really here, your Friday treat!

All together now….

YAAAAAAAAAAAAYYYYYY!

Now, I’m sure all you ladies remember this fellow…

*moment of silence for ogling*

As you might recall this is the inspiration for Orrin Walsh, Cat O’ Nine Tails’ male lead. You might also recall that we had no clue who this glorious creature was. Mind you, I still have no clue for CERTAIN who he is, as my super sleuths and I have come to the conclusion that said photo has been photo shopped which is why we can’t get a definite identification on him, but I digress.

I would like to thank the head of my super sleuth squad, Miss Sue, for working her little fingers and eyeballs to the bone. She really went to bat for us all and scoured the web for pretty men, not to mention the hours upon hours she spent staring at the original photo. Anyhoodle, we believe that our mystery man is…

This is male model, Ben Hill

Can you see the resemblance?

Is it really him with a little Photoshop work? Very well could be. Blue eyes, same brow shape, same facial hair shape and same face shape.

Plus, there are these photos that I found over at the Ben Hill appreciation tumblr, http://fuckyeahbenhill.tumblr.com/ and as far as I’m concerned, Ben works for me 🙂

Oh yes, I’m all aboard the Ben Hill train, next stop, Hotsville!

Holy wet man in a towel Batman!

I’m sorry, I got a little carried away there.

What do you think my brilliant little love monkeys, do you think it’s him? Leave him some love either way, because he is just really really pretty!

As always, these lovely photos will be loaded into my Facebook album for your viewing pleasure. What? You didn’t know I had a Facebook? I DO! You can clickety click it over to the right as well as Twitter, Goodreads and you can also subscribe to my silly little blog if you are so inclined 🙂

Please stay tuned for next Friday for another treat! Be good little love monkeys and have a great weekend!

Until next time,

Patty<3

Hold Onto Your Hats…

Posted on by Patricia Leever

I’m about to get serious for a second.

This is a rare occasion, I assure you, so buckle up!

So, I was waiting to get my girls at school and happened upon someone I hadn’t seen in some time. We chatted about how the kids were all getting bigger and what was new in our lives and I told her about my book coming out in August.

At first she was very impressed, until she found out what genre the book is…historical romance.

Mind you, I am in NO WAY ashamed of what I write, as a matter of fact, I’m damned proud of it. However, not everyone feels the same way. Case in point, my acquaintance.

She made that face that people make when you inadvertently over share and informed me that she used to work at a library and that she remembered seeing a lot of those types of books being checked out. She then proceeded to tell me that she noticed that “those women weren’t of the highest education.”

Um, I’m sorry…stepped in WHAT?!?

I’m pretty sure she just told me that what I write is for stupid people.

Wow. That’s pretty harsh.

Now, mind you, I don’t claim to have written the next Pride and Prejudice or Anna Karenina or anything of that nature, but jeebus, talk about the back-handed comment.

To be perfectly honest, this isn’t the first time I’ve heard/read judgement of this nature regarding my writing genre. I just don’t understand why that is though.

Why is it so bad to read a juicy romance novel? Why is someone automatically judged as being “less educated” because they enjoy reading about two people making the beast with two-backs? Why do people think that you have to “get something” out of a book other than entertainment?

I’m not judging, if a person doesn’t enjoy what I write, that’s perfectly fine, I can accept that. What bothers me is the snap decision that is made when the genre is brought up.

Because I can assure you, that education does not intelligence make.

Hubs went to university with a young woman who was actually asked to come and work at NASA over the summer, and yet this same young woman ran her car out of gas on multiple occasions.

Really? Yes, really.

I should also mention that one of the smartest people I know doesn’t have any higher than a high school education.

My point? Don’t read something just because it’s what everyone else is reading or because it’s what “smart” people read, read something that you are going to enjoy, whether it be smut, autobiographical, a classic, a comic book or an instructional manuel…just read.

Who knows, you might laugh, you might cry, you might want to leap on your significant other like a cheetah, hell, you might even learn something 😉

Until next time my adorable little love monkeys,

Patty <3

Happy Friday:The First Excerpt!

Posted on by Patricia Leever

Happy Friday my cheeky little love monkeys! Did you take this week by it’s proverbial short hairs and show it who’s boss? Yeah ya did!

Well, things are going well with the trailer making! We have nailed down the music we are going to use and have a good pile of images to paw through. I know I’ve said this before, but damn do I have an awesome team in my corner! I am a lucky, lucky little author

So, now that I’m all out of pretty pictures to show you, you might be wondering to yourselves, “Self, what on EARTH could she give us for a Friday treat?”

Have no fear, like I said before, I will not leave my little love monkeys twisting in the wind. That’s just not how I roll.

Today, just for your gorgeous eyeballs, I have the very first excerpt of Cat O’ Nine Tails!

I shall now pause whilst you ooohhh and ahhhhh 😉

This bit is the first little section of the prologue and I hope you enjoy!

In a tavern just off the docks of the small port village of Oaksbridge, Orrin Walsh sipped his ale at a corner table. He paid no mind to the drunken strangers laughing and stumbling noisily around him; his attention was on his quarry, the bloated toad of a man across the room who belched and wiped the rum off his chin with the back of his dirty sleeve. Cormac Doyle, the once semi-respectable merchant and fisherman who had found the act of piracy was a far more lucrative business.

As Orrin watched, a large, hulking man ambled over and took the seat next to Cormac. A smaller figure passing by Orrin’s table then stumbled on its own feet and landed in his lap.

“A thousand pardons, sir,” a gruff female voice spoke from inside the darkness of a hooded cloak, her face completely hidden in the shadows. “For your troubles,” she said as she began to paw around in his lap with a creamy white hand.

Orrin shackled her wrist and swiftly pulled her away from his body. “Be on your way, woman,” he mumbled. “I have no time for whoring.”

“As you please,” she said with a small curtsy and then made her way across the room.

Taking a good swallow from his drink, Orrin watched the woman approach his bounty. She whispered in his ear and twirled a lock of his greasy hair around her finger. As Orrin took another sip of ale, he started to feel strangely lightheaded. He tried to shake off the feeling, but that only seemed to make matters worse. Orrin blinked and held on to the table as the room started to sway around him.

Before he lost consciousness, Orrin saw the woman nod to the large gentleman sitting on the other side of Cormac, who paid for the rum and followed behind the pair as they left the tavern. As they passed his table, a lock of bright red hair fluttered out from under the woman’s hood, and Orrin could make out her red lips curled into a smile.

*****

The next morning, Orrin awoke in a strange bed in a room above the tavern with no recollection of how he’d gotten there. He’d only had half a cup of ale the last night, and even a tankard of whiskey wouldn’t have affected him like this. The only thing he could figure was that the damned hooded harlot must have tried to poison him last night. With a pounding head, he fumbled through his clothes and found he was less all his money and his father’s brass compass. The strangest discovery was a scarlet lip print just above his right hip.

Is your interest now thoroughly piqued? I truly hope so 🙂

Don’t forget darlings that you can friend me on Facebook, Goodread and tweet with me on Twitter, all links to the upper right. You can also just subscribe to this blog and I will deliver my happy times to your email box, PERSONALLY!

Happy Friday Introductions:Rounding Out the Cast!

Posted on by Patricia Leever

Happy Happy Friday my sweet little dumplings! Did you look this week in the face and proclaim, your collective awesomeness? Yeah ya did!

So, this week I had a bit of a “HOLY CRAP” moment. Yes, this week it occurred to me that it is three months until the release of Cat O’ Nine Tails! That’s right, a mere twelve weeks until my baby is released into the world. And yes, this “HOLY CRAP” moment hit me like a brick and literally stopped me in my tracks as I was bopping through my family room to which I actually said out loud, “OH HOLY CRAP!”

I have to admit, everything has been going so fast that I can’t believe it’s really happening. Of course, now that I said that, the next three months are going to crawl by with an unGodly slowness. But there is still so much to do in that little bit of time. There’s a book trailer to make, the cover design, one more round of developmental edits, managerial edits and let us not forget I have to find a place to stick in the random “HOLY CRAP” moments.

*whew*

Okay, let’s move onto important business, the final introduction!

Now, the final Cat O’ Nine Tails character I’d like to introduce you to is…

William

This young man is Danish male model Mathias Lauridsen.  He really struck me as Will when I saw him.  Fresh, young with a regal edge.  Now, that regal edge is very important because William in Queen Winifred’s son.

That’s right, he’s a prince but what on earth is he doing as part of Aeron’s pirate crew?

You will have to read Cat O’ Nine Tails to find out!

Okay, this picture is not of Mr. Mathias Lauridsen nor do I know who this young man is.  But to be completely frank, I don’t really care, he’s pretty and he reminded me of Will.  Yeah, I know, I’m sorry to torture you with the pretty, but I’m sure you will all survive 😉

Now, before you despair over the fact that this is the last introduction, let me assure you all that I would NEVER leave my love monkeys twisting in the wind.  No I will not!  I will find some sort of treat for you every Friday because that’s just how I roll!  I take care of my darling little poppets!  You are just going to have to stay tuned to see what I can come up with for you next week 🙂

Don’t forget, these pretty pictures will be available for your viewing pleasure via my Facebook!  You may also tweet me and Goodreads me or you can just subscribe to this little blog if that’s what turns your crank.  All links to the upper right.

Have a great weekend, my squinchy little love monkeys, and to all the mommies out there have a FABULOUS Mother’s Day!  I know I’m going to, the hubs and spawns are taking me to see Thor tonight, in 3D!  I may actually need a bib because Chris Hemsworth is yu-hu-hummy!

Until next time,

Patty <3
